Inside Out, Photography After Form: Selections from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection - CIFO

A selection of the photographic holdings of the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection, co-curated by Simon Baker and Tanya Barson, this exhibition explores the creative relationship between the lens and the construction, production and deconstruction of form. Rather than making a chronological survey of photographic works represented in the collection, the exhibition brings together contrasting images, as well as bodies of works that look at space, light and form, challenging the representational tradition of photography. From December 1, 2010 through March 6, 2011. CIFO. 1018 North Miami Avenue. Miami, FL 33136. 305.455.3380

Jonathan Meese: Sculpture. MoCA - North Miami

First major solo museum exhibition in the U.S. of German artist Jonathan Meese. The exhibition focuses on Meese’s three-dimensional work, including his first ceramic talisman created when he was 15 years old, as well as small assemblages and dioramas from the beginning of his career that have never been shown before. Also included are recent works such as massive bronze sculptures, large-scale ceramics, models and set designs for performing arts productions. Jonathan Meese is best known for his expressionistic style of painting, but also for his powerful bronze sculptures. From December 1, 2010 through February 13, 2011. Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA). 770 NE 125th Street. North Miami, FL 33161. 305.893.6211

Enrique Martínez Celaya: Selected Works 1992-2010. Gary Nader Fine Art

The exhibition offers a chronological survey of significant paintings, sculptures, and drawings from most of the artist’s recent major projects. Martínez Celaya’s works come from a realm of mystery, where literature, science, philosophy and religion serve his purpose of exploring the human condition. His imagery is loaded with a symbolism that is mostly associated with certain states of the mind, and are connected to his personal life experiences, memory and own perception of reality. His work is part of the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. From December 1, 2010 through February 27, 2011. Gary Nader Fine Art. 62 NE 27th Street. Miami, FL 33137. 305.576.0256

Nicolas Lobo. Limestoned. Charest-Weinberg Gallery

Miami native Nicolas Lobo makes his solo debut at Charest-Weinberg Gallery this winter. Lobo is known for his fascination with exotic materials - cough syrup, human amino acids, Windex, lard, and crushed-up breakfast cereal - to name just a few. Primarily a sculptor, Lobo has an enduring fascination with the dark underbelly of America’s various subcultures, though his chosen materials suggest a sweetness masking both delusional mindset and sinister intent. Rest assured that defacement, caricature, and sly critique - the three-headed Hydra of Lobo’s practice - will be the triple threat on view at Limestoned. From November 30, 2010 through February 27, 2011. Charest-Weinberg Gallery. 250 NW 23rd Street, #408. Miami, FL 33127. 1.305.292.0411

Ilya & Emilia Kabakov. Someone under the Carpet. Wolfgang Roth & Partners

For the first time in Miami, significant works from Ilya and Emilia Kabakov are presented to Miami audiences outside the art fairs. The exhibition includes works from previous shows such as the installation Someone’s crawling under the floor, originally staged at the Museum van Hendendaagse Kunst Antwerpen back in 1998, in which viewers stand around a roped-off carpeted area where a human figure slowly twisted and moved beneath the carpet. Also on view are four large-scale carpets from The Flying series (2005-2006) and editions from Ten Characters edition series (1994-96). From November 30, 2010 through January 15, 2011. Wolfgang Roth & Partners. 201 NE 39th Street. Miami, FL 33137. 305. 576.6960

Isaac Julien. Bass Museum of Art

The show presents a comprehensive selection of Isaac Julien’s films and photographs in nearly ten years, including works such as Vagabondia, Baltimore and Paradise Omeros, as well as the U.S. premier of Julien’s most ambitious project to date: Ten Thousand Waves. This nine-screen installation forms a dynamic architectural structure through which viewers navigate the multiple narratives arising from Julien’s collaboration with some of China’s leading artists, who have actively participated in the project. Inspired by the Morecambe Bay tragedy of 2004, the film combines fact, fiction and film essay genres against the background of Chinese history and legends.
