Pip Brant: The Flying Carpet and Other Reusables
From Oct 12th through Dec 9th, 2007

As part of the Florida Artist Series, the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University presents an exhibition of Pip Brant’s most recent series of work (2004-2007) featuring weaved, dyed and embroidered tablecloth works and two large-scale interactive installations.

Brant’s work addresses sociopolitical issues with a lighthearted irony. She turns found pieces of textile into text, creating a visual discourse that juxtaposes current newsworthy events with “nostalgic and sentimentally loaded 50’s tablecloths and dyed imagery that challenges the original purpose of decorative tablecloths that once covered a festive table surrounded by a well-behaved, tightly defined, American family”, says Brant.

In The Flying Carpet and Other Reusables, Brant resorts to her multi-layered, deceivingly decorative imagery to reenact “the absurd ways in which communities face compromising issues.” Her tablecloths are like table reports that reflect on social issues affecting American families, such as information, security, morality and economy. The artist has exhibited her work nationally as well as internationally, ranging form artist’s books to guerrilla installations. She is a faculty member of FIU’s College of Architecture + the Arts and holds a BFA from the Universities of Montana, Wyoming, Missouri and London, UK. Among her residencies are the Hungarian Multicultural Exchange; Balatonfüred, Hungary; the Wyoming Visual Arts Fellowship and the South Florida Cultural Consortium for Visual Arts and Media Arts. Her work is in the collections of the Nicolaysen Art Museum, Casper, WY; the Rock Springs Art Center, Rock Springs, WY; UCROSS Foundation, WY; and the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, FL.

On Wednesday October 24th Brant gave a personal tour of the exhibition, as part of the Frost Art Museum Wednesday After Hours series. A catalog with an essay by Eleanor Heartney is available.
