Nela Ochoa: Genetic PortraitsApr 17th through Sep 6th, 2009 The Frost Art Museum at Florida International University is presenting Venezuelan artist Nela Ochoa: Genetic Portraits. The exhibition features key pieces from Ochoa’s collection, including Materia Gris Incompleta / Gray Matter Incomplete. Nela Ochoa is a prolific and internationally recognized multi-media artist who works simultaneously and seamlessly in the areas of video art, sculpture, and performance exploring the genetic codes of human bodies.
Ochoa’s interest in the human body has led her to integrate X-rays and MRI’s images into her videos, paintings and installations. Her most recent work has led her further into the body, where she explores the mysteries of DNA. Among the many awards Ochoa has garnered, most prominently, she has received the Premio de Arte No-Objetal, Salón Arturo Michelena, Valencia, 1987 for the video-installation Invernadero.
“The Frost is a wonderful venue in which to bring art, science, medicine and research together in a multi-disciplinary forum and spark wonderful intellectual discourse,” said Dr. Carol Damian, director and chief curator of The Frost Art Museum.
