Ballet Gamonet. New Season

By Abel S.

Ballet Gamonet is one of those South Florida true gems. Under the artistic direction of Jimmy Gamonet De Los Heros, the company has announced its third season beginning October, 2007 at Gusman Center for the Performing Arts and the Bailey Hall.

Gamonet’s vision is what has shaped the success of the company. After fourteen years as resident choreographer and Ballet Master of Miami City Ballet, he has now created a signature style for its own company, manifested since its early performances. His works in ballet’s neoclassical style - both abstract and narrative - have been noted and rewarded at a national and international level. The artist has received three separate Choreography Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and a State of Florida Choreography Fellowships in 1993 and 1995 among many other international laurels received in recognition for his contributions to the art form. Another recognition worth mentioning is the 2000 Bill Hindman Award given by the South Florida Critics Circle and the Theatre League of South Florida, that honors his career’s artistic achievement and significant contributions to the development of the performing arts in the region.

This year, the company has expanded to include new dancers in its constant striving for incorporating new and fresh talents that contribute to the company’s style and professionalism. “It is important for our audiences to see work by talented choreographers working today,” he has noted. “I’m always trying to accomplish more, to keep doing new things, not to recycle, but to entertain by adding fresh input and voices that contribute to ballet as an art form.”

And it is true. The company’s multinational cast includes dancers from Cuba, Argentina, Colombia, Germany, Japan, England and the United States. Its upcoming season, besides including two world premiers by Jimmy Gamonet himself, will also present new works created specially for the company by three guest choreographers: Jerry Opdenaker, Mark Godden, and William Soleau. “The company has received positive reception from every angle; growing audiences, improvement of dancers and repertory,” said Gamonet, “this has all been made possible by the support of the community who has embraced Ballet Gamonet spiritually, intellectually and financially”.

From his early training at his family’s theater in Lima, Peru, Jimmy Gamonet De Los Heros ranked high among Peruvian dancers as to later cast his fortunes with young dancers from all over the world in New York. He describes his experience as “… moments that really called up for taking leaps of faith, “but when you’re a dancer you have to take leaps, right?” He adds, “One of those leaps landed him here in Miami, and the rest, as they say, is history”.
