The Frost Symphony Orchestra, directed by Thomas Sleeper, opens Festival Miami 2011 with a bold and brassy French horn exploration of cel- ebrated music by Franz Haydn, distinguished com- poser Gunther Schuller, and premier hornist and composer Richard Todd. Program includes Haydn’s “Hornsignal” Symphony 31, Schuller’s Concerto No. 1 for Horn and Orchestra and Todd’s ceLebrA- CiOn, commissioned by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra for its 40th anniversary.

Winner of a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award
Tenor saxophonist, composer, NEA Jazz Master, and Grammy winner Benny Golson is admired for his dynam- ic artistry and expressive style. Jazz aficionados love his “Blues March,” “I Remember Clifford,” and “Killer Joe,” while TV and film fans know his music from M*A*S*H, Mission Impossible, and The Cosby Show theme. Golson appears at Festival Miami as a guest soloist, perform- ing many of his favorite big band arrangements with the DownBeat Award-winning Frost Studio Jazz Band.

Claire Huangci was awarded first prize at the National Chopin Piano Competition of the United States in 2010 and first prize at the International Chopin Competition in 2009 for her distinguished Chopin interpretations. The 20-year-old pianist performs at venues and festivals worldwide, including Vienna Konzerthaus, Mozarteum Salzburg, Aspen Festival, and Carnegie Hall. At Festival Miami she will perform a program of solo repertoire by Chopin and conclude with Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in F-sharp minor, Op. 1 with the Frost Symphony Orchestra.

Combining the musical traditions of Cuba with American rock and jazz, Cuba-born vocalist and bandleader Willy Chirino has more than 100 songs and 28 albums to his credit. More than 60 artists, including The Gypsy Kings, have recorded Chirino’s song, “Soy.” His album, Son del Alma, won him a Grammy Award for Best Salsa/Meren- gue Album.
