Art + Gallery at The Village of Merrick Park. Dreams on Dali

By Bernard NAJE

“Every morning I wake up to a great pleasure, the one of being Dali !” used to repeat Salvador Dali very often in his days. For us, there is another great pleasure to experience every morning and that is the one of being in Miami. This season more than ever, when we will enjoy the work of this true master of Surrealism.

The attention of the international art world over Miami is growing by the minute, and this year, there is another clear sign of its solid and furious consolidation as an art Mecca. For the first time, a large exhibition of sculptural works of Salvador Dali will be offered to the public in Coral Gables, one of the most consolidated cultural cities in South Florida.

If an exhibition like this would have been staged in New York or Paris, it would probably been staged on Central Park or the Champs Elysees. In Miami, we were yet to find a suitable venue to showcase such an important collection. After months of consideration, the gardens of The Village of Merrick Park were selected. The elegant cafes and restaurant terraces of the village provided the perfect scenario for contemplation.

This remarkable exhibition has been coordinated by Art + Gallery at The Village of Merrick Park together with the Salvador Dali Foundation and Robert Descharrnes, the most acclaimed expert on the work of the artist. The thirty four pieces in the exhibition, including fifteen large scale bronzes, were gathered from six prestigious European private collections. The works will be on display for six months to coincide with all art fairs and events of the season. This exhibition is the outcome of a year preparation, holding a value of approximately ten million dollars.

A great educational opportunity indeed and of course, a wonderful feeling coming to realize that local art galleries are capable of presenting such an important art reference. Miami is becoming the home of many emerging artists and institutions. The potential of its art scene is infinite and feeding it with inputs like this will undoubtedly contribute to solidify its cultural foundation.

By looking at one of the pieces included in the exhibition, “Nude Ascending the stair case – Homage to Marcel Duchamp”, I couldn’t stop smiling. The sculpture is such a mirror image of Miami today. The allegory to the founding father of contemporary art, Marcel Duchamp speaks for it self, especially when I see the figure ascending the stairs. Yes, it is a privilege to wake up to the pleasure of being in Miami.
